A Different Kind Of Dream

A. D I F F E R E N T. K I N D. O F. D R E A M. 🙌

Open yourself up…to a different kind of dream

Open yourself up…to a different kind of dream

I moved out to LA in 2000 to be an actor.
I became Barbra Streisand’s personal shopper.
Then, I became a country singer in the heart of LA’s Americana scene in a sweet, little americana band called Hawkeye.
The band broke up, and I moved to Nashville to be a country singer and songwriter.
After Nashville didn’t work out as exactly as I planned, I moved back to LA, with my tail between my legs.
A heartbreak or broken dream or two later, I started a blog, and everything changed.
If you had told me back then, during any of those failures, that those dreams would come true – they would just look a little different than I had pictured – and I would get to be my authentic self for a living – I would never have believed you.
What I’m saying is this:
Sometimes, we have a dream and we give up on that dream when it doesn’t come to life exactly as we pictured that it would.
But, sometimes – if you just open your mind and heart to the endless possibilities out there – those dreams evolve.
And, they turn into even better, bigger dreams than you had ever hoped, or even dared to dream.
This past weekend was a dream weekend for me, as I’m sure you can imagine.
I attended Grammys parties on Friday, drove out to Palm Springs for 18 hours for the Modernism Week kickoff to toast the talk of the town – and my dear friend – designer, Christopher Kennedy. Sunday, I attended the Clive Davis party as a guest of Cover Girl, where I witnessed the coolest musical evening I’ve ever experienced. And, yesterday, I attended the Grammys for the first time, and in a beautifully full circle moment, caught up with all of my old music & recording family at the afterparty.
Today, I’m running on very little sleep from the past 4 days. While, I’m hoping I can string together sentences for a meeting later today, I just can’t wipe this darned smile off my face.
Here’s my message for you.
Dream.
Dream big.
Work hard.
Tell people what you want.
Help other people reach their dreams.
Do everything you can to get there.
And, then…
LET IT GO.
Leave some space open for a different kind of dream, because sometimes…those are the BEST kind of dreams.

Disappointment & Arnold Palmers

Disappointment & Arnold Palmers
*Sunnies ℅ LAMB

Today, I had the loveliest lunch with Christeen of Angeleno Magazine at Porta Via today.

It was the perfect midday break – filled with shrimp salad and Arnold palmers – in Beverly Hills in the middle of a busy week that feels more like summertime than February.

Today, I also received a little piece of disappointing news.

But, I have learned that I rarely experience any kind of loss without love or levity being born from it.

Sometimes, a dose of disappointment can end up opening up something as simple as space – space you didn’t even know you needed – in which something else can bloom.

As we move forward into this week, I say this for us all: “Let us peacefully let go of what is not for us, and be open to the possibility -and beauty – of the unexpected.” 🙌🍹🍹

It all began with Adirondack chairs…

With casting director, and dear friend, Sarah Katzman

With casting director, and dear friend, Sarah Katzman

I met this beautiful birthday girl, casting director Sarah Katzman, in Cape Cod over 15 years ago, where I sat – a heartbroken 21-year-old, clad in a powder blue fairy outfit, with glitter eyeliner – at a costume-themed wedding, where my lifelong crush was getting married.

There, we sat next to one another at the afterparty, overlooking the water in Adirondack chairs, where I spilled my juvenile heart, and she cheered me up, with her talk about LA, where she currently lived and worked, and the place I hoped to move to, upon college graduation the following May. I remember feeling very alone, and I remember feeling that not only did she tolerate me, but that I had made a friend, and, thus, was a little less alone.

That friendship continued – and, was tested – when I did indeed move to LA in 2000, and my mother and I proceeded to drill her about everything from what hotel we should stay in, to where I should live, to where we should eat, to where we could get furniture, to where we could get manicures. It is one of my most favorite times in life, and she helped make the transition from my family home to my adult home, both easier – and sweeter – for my mom and me.

I am forever grateful for that, and I am so thankful to know this dear heart – the kind, listening girl she was to me when we were sitting in Adirondack chairs, the lady she has become, and the strong woman who lives just a hop, skip and a jump away up Hauser…and just around the corner from Vinoteque. Love you, Katzman. Happy birthday. ** My tee: CloverCloth

Friendsgiving 2015: A Very Hickory Farms Friendsgiving

Friendsgiving 2015

Friendsgiving 2015

My favorite thing on this here planet is to have people sitting around my table.

So, when Hickory Farms and I decided to team up to host a Friendsgiving luncheon to launch their Signature Party Planner Gift Box ($46) this holiday season, which benefits No Kid Hungry

we wanted to create a warm, open-hearted environment where many of the inspiring women I know could sit, dine, support one another, share their successes and proclaim their goals and gratitude.

Mismatched plates? No problem. Pick up seasonal plates at a flea market or discount store for whimsical, carefree holiday entertaining. I got these plates for $2 each!

Putting the friends in Friendsgiving

Putting the friends in Friendsgiving with Eva of Happily Eva After, Lily Diamond of Kale and Caramel, and Ellen of Hedley and Bennett.

I invited a few of the finest folks in my social media influencer life, who really appreciate the reason of the season: gratitude.

Starting the lunch off in the right spirit by placing a "I am grateful for…" card on everyone's place setting, to get them in the mood…for gratitude, of course!

Good guests can make or break an intimate in-home gathering, and if there’s even one person who’s a weak link, simply by bringing in a bit of negative energy, the experience can be ruined for all. Well, there was no weak link at this ladies lunch. Instead, a lunch that was supposed to last 2 hours, lasted almost 4, with all of the guests staying until sundown, save a couple who had prior obligations.

As beautiful as the sunflower centerpieces were, the real centerpiece of the lunch was gratitude

We went ’round the table, sharing our stories, listening to those of others, and brainstorming about how we can make a difference both in each other’s lives and in this world…all while drinking wine and nibbling on cheese and sausage. I watched women who had never met before leave as good friends, and knew that from this single, magical afternoon, some life-changing alliances were born.

First up? Drinks, of course. Did you know that Hickory Farms sells wine? And, I mean really, really GOOD wine!! My favorite is the Flora Springs Merlot ($40). I want to buy like 6 cases of it for all of the holiday entertaining I do…and maybe just to sip while watching Scandal. Who’s with me?

Shame on the Moon: Wine Monday at Sofitel Wine Days

Wine Monday. What? It's a thing.

Wine Monday. What? It’s a thing.

As Rodney Crowell once wrote & Bob Seger once sang, “Shame on the moon.”

I have been feeling a little out of sorts all day today and, well, I blame the moon.

Luckily, @SofitelLosAngeles invited me out for a little private tasting party to kick off their #SofitelWineDays at @EsterelRestaurant.

There’s nothing I’d rather be doing on a moody Monday. ‘

So, yes, shame on the moon, but hooray for wine flights!

Shoot.

Now, I’m sad I’m not going to the @RodneyJcrowell & @emmylousongbird show at the El Rey.

9/11: Healing, Reflecting and Destiny

Reflecting today on 9/11 with Kelsey Patel

Reflecting today on 9/11 with Kelsey Patel

Where are you reflecting upon 9/11 today? This is where I am. On a rooftop in downtown LA with this one. This is Kelsey J Patel. She is the most magical, loving and inspirational person I’ve ever met. She is a renowned healer, here in Los Angeles. And, she is also someone I am proud to call my dear friend. She will be hosting a 9/11 guided meditation on Periscope (as @KelseyJpatel) at 4 pm PST today to bring some peace and healing to everyone who needs it. Today, Kelsey brought in 2 of the most beautiful crystals – crystals that heal, protect, cleanse & promote love. After our session, I told her I felt compelled to take a picture of her and her Labyrinth’ish matching crystals and dress.

We went outside on her downtown penthouse balcony, and we felt such an energy in regards to 9/11. At that moment, a plane flew overhead. That’s where I am today.

But, where were you on September 11, 2001?

I was in LA, where it felt like a ghost town – like a chapter from Stephen King’s The Stand. There was so much sadness. So much pain. So many prayers. So many lost souls just wandering around. I watched the news come in with my friends Sarah & Ned Brower at our friend Craig Weaver’s apartment.

That night, I went to my new roommate’s boyfriend’s house in Laurel Canyon, where I ended up meeting what would become my band – and my family – for the next four years, Hawkeye. We all listened to my bandmate singing Fire and Rain, and I knew we would never be able to think of that song the same way again.

When I recall that heartbreak of a day, I remember both how empty the world felt and how full my heart was.

I had found my people.

And yet life as we knew it would never be the same.

Many lives would never be the same.

On 9/11, people were brought together forging destinies they never even knew they were meant to have – some destinies being brutally taken away and other destinies being discovered.

Today, as I reflect with @KelseyJpatel, I pray for all of those who lost loved ones on that fateful day.

I pray for those who will never heal. And, I also pray for those who have yet to find their destinies.

But, most of all, I pray for purpose, for patience & for peace.

Striiikes & Strong Brows with Kristie Streicher

I’ve always been scared of a strong brow. I’m not sure why exactly, but I always equate a strong brow with strong women, like Anjelica Huston, and until recently, I feared being strong, as girls sometimes do. I wanted to be delicate. Light. A wisp of a thing. A pixie. Guess what? At 5’9″, I am none of these things. True confession.

So, in the last few years, I’ve grown up – and embraced who I am, and part of that is embracing the fact that I am indeed a strong woman. And, likewise, I’ve embraced strong brows, as well. But strong brows? Well, they need to be shaped and maintained by a strong aesthetician.

Enter the Wonder Woman of strong brows, Kristie Streicher.

Yup.That's Kristie. And yup, she's THAT killing in person. A gorgeous girl who's destined to gorgify your brows. p.s. And noooo, you don't have to go purple like she did here…but the beauty is that you could!

Yup.That’s Kristie. And yup, she’s THAT killing in person. A gorgeous girl who’s destined to gorgify your brows. p.s. And noooo, you don’t have to go purple like she did here…but the beauty is that you could!

Kristie’s studio, Striiike, has become the go-to celebrity brow beauty bar, in Beverly Hills.

Hair clipped back and ready for better brows.

I stopped by recently and was not prepared for how much of a difference she would make, by simply tweezing and tinting my brows into her signature “feathered brow.”

I walked out, feeling a little like Linda Evangelista, circa 1992…and I mean that in the BEST way.

Kristie is gentle, fast and you’re transformed in mere minutes.

Before…and After Kristie.

Before…and After Kristie.

While it’s not the cheapest option (shaping ranges from $100-$200), I would argue that it’s the single best thing you can do to improve your beauty routine.

Look! Even with my eyes closed, my glamour is on point with those Kristie-shaped brows!

Look! Even with my eyes closed, my glamour is on point with those Kristie-shaped brows!

When your brows are full, shaped and strong, you’ll find your other features complement one another more, and you’ll even find that you don’t have a need for as much makeup as usual.

More brow means less makeup.

More brow means less makeup.

Plus, did I mention how much fun she is? She had me laughing and feeling more confident, all in our 30-minute sesh…and there wasn’t even wine involved!!

This girl? Good times. Gorgeous brows. What more could you want?

This girl? Good times. Gorgeous brows. What more could you want?

So, if you’re looking to give good face, look no further than Kristie. It’s a glamour gamechanger for sure.

*Sidenote? I went last in April and am JUST going back for my follow-up visit this week. It’s July, y’all. That’s how good she is.

FUN FACT: The one brow product Kristie swears by? Mary Kay Brow Gel ($10). She says it’s a must-have to keep brows in line. And since she recommended it to me back in April, I’ve been swearing by it, too. Plus, as a Dallas girl, I loooove me my Mary Kay!

Who knew? The must-have brow product? None other than Mary Kay brow gel. So says brow expert, Kristie Streicher.

The Ultimate Host/Hostess Gift: A Pretty Party In A Basket

Talk about a party in a basket!

My friends, Christopher and David, are always the most lovely hosts, when I stay at their house in Palm Springs. And, lovely hosts deserve lovely host gifts!

The ultimate host gift, picked up at Joan's On Third

The ultimate host gift, picked up at Joan’s On Third

So, for the past few visits, I’ve swung by my favorite neighborhood market, Joan’s On Third, to pick up some tasty sundries.

I picked up some of Joan’s famous spiced pecans, assorted cheeses (a sharp cheddar, Humboldt Fog, sheep’s milk, and creamy goat), quince jam, a baguette, and some gluten-free crackers. I added in a few bottles of my own Club W vino from home, and carried it all car-friendly in a retro wooden crate from Marshall’s.

Tasty sundries galore...

This tree could just have easily have read, “DM hearts NKH”

Today, I’m feeling miiiiiiiighty grateful, because yesterday, I got to eat so that kids can be fed.

I know. This sounds like a dichotomy. How can eating actually feed others?

Well, if I know anything from my collaborations with No Kid Hungry, it’s that with these guys, anything is possible.

Linds & I at Taste Of The Nation LA, benefitting my beloved No Kid Hungry

Linds & I at Taste Of The Nation LA, benefitting my beloved No Kid Hungry

No Kid Hungry’s Taste Of The Nation events do just that. Food-loving patrons pay for a ticket to get the opportunity to try bites from a bevy of the best chefs in their city, and 100% of the profits earned go to No Kid Hungry programs. That certainly fills me up more than any pizza could.

So, yesterday, I headed to Media Park in Culver City for Taste of The Nation LA, with my friend, Lindsey, and we ate and drank to our hearts’ content.
